Foreword
Aloha, my friend! Glad you are here.
Imagine this: You fly to Hawaii as a completely normal tourist, speaking not a single word of English at first, but with a head full of dreams and your hard-earned savings in your luggage. You really just want to windsurf, breathe in the sweet scent of plumeria blossoms, and enjoy the freedom at Kailua Beach.
And then, years later, at eleven o’clock at night, you look out the window of a departing airplane down at the sea of lights of Oahu—and you know that you just paid for your very own condo on the 31st floor completely in cash.
That is our story. The story of Mischko and me, the “Texan”.
Every year, millions of people dream of Hawaii. They see the luxury resorts, the perfect beaches, and the glossy brochures. What they don’t see is the cutthroat market behind it. On this website, we take you on an unforgettable journey through time and take a look behind the scenes of paradise together.
Experience firsthand how we learned to pick dollars off the lawn, how we used miles to outsmart the suits in Business Class, and how a “horror on the 31st floor” in Pearl City that desperately needed renovating became a crisis-proof cash flow machine that brought in rent unseen for eleven years.
Our journey is full of crazy coincidences, a cross-eyed notary, angry realtors, and the best lesson you could ever teach greedy timeshare salesmen in Ko Olina. Learn how we made our dreams come true without checking our brains at the door—and why, at the crucial moment, we shouted: “I’d have to be completely stupid!”
Grab a cold drink, make yourself comfortable, and dive into our real, unvarnished island reality.
CHAPTER 1: Oahu 1991: Where Dollars Grow on the Lawn
An Unplanned Return Flight
In 1991, we had actually planned to spend our entire vacation on Maui. But because we couldn’t find affordable accommodation near Hoʻokipa, we flew back from Maui to Oahu that same evening to the hotel where we had already spent our first three nights: the Turtle Bay Hilton. Precisely because the North Shore wasn’t visited by many tourists back then, we absolutely wanted to stay there. Vacationers mostly just passed through on tours in smaller buses or rented a car to circle the entire island in a single day. If they made a stop on the North Shore, they stopped at almost every beach for about five minutes and took a few photos so they could say back home in Asia: “We were also on the world-famous North Shore.” And then they were gone.
The Midnight Reception Record
When we got back from Maui that evening, it was already midnight. Back then, I spoke absolutely no English. Mischko went to the reception.
The manager smiled at us and said in English: “Good evening!” Mischko answered: “Good evening, we called from Maui and confirmed by phone that we were coming back. Someone promised us that we would get the same room back!” “What is your name?” “Texans!”
The manager looked at her computer and said: “Yes, the room is reserved. How long would you like to stay?” Mischko replied: “28 days!” The manager asked again in disbelief: “How many days?” Mischko repeated proudly: “28 days!”
The manager shook her head and said: “Excuse me, I thought I misheard! When guests come to us, they usually stay for one, two, or maybe three days. So far, we’ve never had anyone stay with us for more than three days at a time!”
Mischko translated this for me excitedly. So, in 1991, including those first three nights, we stayed there for a total of 31 days. Which meant that we had unintentionally set a real overnight record at the Turtle Bay Hilton!
Pizza Bob’s Instead of Expensive Seafood
During these 31 days, we not only saved on the room but also enormously on food. The Turtle Bay had an exclusive and first-class menu, but for me, it wasn’t worth it at all: A meal there cost a hefty $55 per person, and since I didn’t like fish or seafood, it was a pure waste.
Fortunately, we discovered the restaurant “Pizza Bob’s” in Haleiwa. There, we were the only tourists far and wide and could enjoy the real Hawaiian atmosphere. Four TVs hung on the walls where we could watch the surfers, and the locals laughed and roared with enthusiasm from one side of the restaurant to the other.
Compared to the Turtle Bay Hilton, we easily saved half the money here—including drinks and tip—and had pure fun every evening right among the locals!
The Corvette as a Tourist Magnet
We swam in Laie in front of the Mormon temple. That was the most beautiful and quietest beach of all. We spent the whole day there almost completely alone because the locals had to work. If someone did come to the beach, it was at most twice a day.
It was only the tourists; driving by, they would see our Corvette Stingray standing there all alone. Since our rental car was so attractive, they looked at the car, automatically spotted the blue ocean in the background, and got curious. They turned around, drove back, and parked next to us. They then had to walk about thirty meters across the green lawn, stayed at most a few minutes for some photos with the waves, and were gone again.
Since Mischko and I were completely alone for the rest of the day, we enjoyed our true paradise.
Like Bloodhounds on the Lawn – A Gift from the Wind Gods
On a particular day, it was almost dark when we packed up our things to walk to the car as usual. I walked ahead with my gear.
While carrying the bag with the sail, I looked down at the grass—and could hardly believe my eyes. In the pale twilight, something inconspicuous stood out from the green: a dollar bill! I asked aloud into the silence: “Where did you come from?!”
Since there was no answer, I muttered to myself with a smile: “Well, a dollar is a dollar, I’ll take you with me.”
There was not a soul to be seen far and wide; we had enjoyed absolute solitude all day long. But when I bent down, I spotted the next bill right next to it! I dropped my board and excitedly called out to Mischko, who was just catching up: “You’ll never guess what I found!”
“What is it?” she asked curiously. “Two dollars!” She laughed in disbelief: “Really?” “Yes, look here! And you know what? Where there are two dollars, maybe there is more.”
Seized by hunting fever, we dropped everything and scoured the ground like two bloodhounds. Sometimes she called: “I have one too!”, then me again: “Here is another one!” We systematically inspected the entire lawn, about forty meters wide, between the solitary house and the adjacent woods. In the end, we actually held a proud 27 dollars in our hands!
Today I know that it wasn’t mere coincidence that gave us this magical moment in Laie—right on the lawn in front of the bus stop at the Mormon temple. It was a true Mākana, a gift from heaven.
The Hawaiian wind gods themselves must have had a hand in this: Either the wind goddess Laʻamaomao had opened her magic calabash, or her grandson Pakaʻa, the lord of the winds, had scattered the bills right at our feet under the cover of darkness to bless us with the true Aloha Spirit. An unforgettable treasure for our Hawaii memories!
CHAPTER 2: Our First Vacation – The Mileage Plus Miracle and Dollars on the Lawn
The Dream of Paradise Begins at Berlin-Tegel
It was in the 1990s when the great dream of Hawaii became a reality for us. Back then, we flew out of Berlin-Tegel as completely normal tourists. When we tell people today what that very first flight to paradise cost us, everyone just shakes their head in disbelief. But it is the absolute truth!
The Brilliant System of the “Suits”
We were the pioneers of a system that the suits at the airlines had invented as the perfect customer bait: United Airlines Mileage Plus.
This system was created in the USA in 1981 in the midst of a brutal price war following the deregulation of air travel. At the time, United invented a loyalty program during a ten-day night shift, where you were credited with virtual “miles” for every kilometer flown. What the airlines didn’t suspect back then: This simple customer bait developed into a gigantic multi-billion dollar business.
The Golden Era of Flying
But the 90s were the absolute golden era of this system for us passengers. While today you need hundreds of thousands of miles for a long-haul flight, back then, a measly 25,000 accumulated miles with United Airlines were enough for a completely free flight to the other side of the world—straight to Hawaii!
Our Unbeatable Mileage Formula
Mischko and I had seen through the system immediately. Since we had already traveled to the USA three times before—twice to Hawaii—we had diligently collected points on our accounts. The distance to Hawaii is gigantic: A single round-trip flight from Berlin via London and the USA brings massive miles to the account.
From this, we built our own unbeatable savings formula: We regularly paid for only two flights and flew completely for free every third time! Because the route was so long, we collected so many points on the paid flights that we still had plenty of miles left after the free third flight. This cushion was perfectly sufficient to start the system all over again.
To Hawaii for the Price of a Pizza!
We simply called United headquarters in Frankfurt, had the miles deducted for the flight from Berlin-Tegel to Hawaii, and the ticket itself was completely free. The only thing we had to pay out of our own pocket was the pure airport taxes and government fees in Germany. An aviation tax didn’t even exist back then.
The actual number on our bill was exactly a ridiculous 17 Deutsche Marks (DM) in tax per person from Berlin! For both of us together, that made exactly 34 Marks for two people!
For the equivalent of a pizza and two Cokes, we took off from the legendary Tegel airport, boarded the jumbo jet, and flew completely for free toward the Pacific. The airlines thought they had baited us, but we had completely turned the tables.
How to Coldly Save 7,000 Marks
Thanks to this 34-Mark miracle, we flew twice to Hawaii and once to the mainland to Las Vegas. It was the starting shot for our very personal island reality.
Since we had saved almost 3,000 Marks through the miles and also didn’t rent a car in Hawaii—because we had our own bicycles in our luggage—we saved tons of money. Together with the free tickets and the saved rental car, the total savings amounted to around 7,000 Deutsche Marks!
We hardly had any English in our luggage, but with 17 Marks tax per person, we had the key to paradise in our pockets! Here, right in the lush green of the islands, we also learned how to literally pick dollars off the lawn if you just keep your eyes open.
The Great Miracle at London Airport
Shock at the Counter: The Unexpected Call
When we arrived in London for our layover on our mileage flight this time, something happened that immediately made our hearts beat faster: Suddenly we heard our names called loudly over the airport loudspeakers.
Together with our niece, who was accompanying us, we walked to the United counter with pounding hearts. At first, I didn’t understand a word of English. At the request of the airport employee, Mischko took out our tickets.
Upgrade! From Coach to Luxury
After just a few minutes, the employee spoke intensely with her. All of a sudden, Mischko turned around, beaming from ear to ear, and said: “Honey, she gave us better seats in Business Class!”
Because our niece had the same last name as us, the United Airlines ground staff probably thought she was our daughter and was incredibly generous. From coach to Business Class—that was something!
When we were called to board, we had to completely rethink our approach. No more coach! As pioneers of flying, we proudly stood in the line where people seemingly earned an incredible amount of money.
A Berlin Roofer Among Fine Ties
At first, I didn’t even dare to look over at coach. I was almost a bit embarrassed. I felt uncomfortable, as if I had betrayed my own working class. But whether we wanted to or not: Since Business Class was called, it was time for us to step into this completely new world of luxury!
The three of us now sat in this United Airlines plane on three seats with a total value of about 30,000 Deutsche Marks. My monthly wage on the roof at the time was just around 1,550 Deutsche Marks—and here I was, sitting in a single seat worth about 10,000 Marks. And all for a ridiculous 17 Marks in taxes!
Like a Movie with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill
Even during boarding, we were allowed to board before Economy Class. It was almost a bit uncomfortable for me among all the finely dressed people with ties, who acted as if they were better than us “nobodies”. Secretly, the whole thing reminded me of a movie with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer!
True Jewels on the Leather Seats
When we entered the plane, we first had to shed our habits from coach. The three of us needed some time to get used to the wide leather seats and all the electronics.
On the seats, we found exclusive little bags in which we discovered true jewels: An elegant sleep mask, toothpaste and toothbrush, mouthwash, a comb, a shaving kit, and cozy, warm socks. We had naturally never seen anything like this in coach!
Goosebump Moment at Takeoff
Barely had we settled in when the stewardess came to our seat and politely addressed me by my last name. I really got goosebumps: Me, the “nobody” from the Berlin roof, sitting in Business Class, and a person I have never seen in my life smiles at me and greets me by name!
She offered us a tray of drinks as a welcome. Naturally, we didn’t want to embarrass ourselves as “Economy Classers”, so we stayed very well-behaved and elegantly took just one glass of champagne and an orange juice. Even the glasses on the tray were completely different from the flimsy plastic cups we knew from coach—they were real, heavy crystal glasses.
A Meal Like in Hollywood
Crystal Glasses and Freshly Ironed Cloth Napkins
Then we were handed a proper menu. Not just the typical “here, eat this” in a plastic bowl like in coach; we were actually allowed to choose our elegant courses.
The meal was served with real, high-quality metal cutlery and white, freshly ironed cloth napkins instead of cheap paper ones. The portions were of outstanding quality and tasted absolutely delicious. We felt like we were in a beautiful Hollywood movie.
Twice a Year to Paradise
This flight would not be our last highlight: In the years that followed, we were rewarded many times as loyal pioneers. Through clever mileage collecting, we saved so much money over time that we could easily afford to travel from Berlin to Hawaii twice a year.
The Next Savings Miracle in Hawaii
A Fateful Encounter in Kailua
We also had incredible luck with our accommodation on the island this time. We already knew our landlady in Kailua, on Kaimalino Street, from our second Hawaii vacation.
Her house was the second to last on the street, and our rental house back then was right next door. On the way to the beach, we had briefly greeted her almost every morning because she was always sitting so nicely on her lanai (porch).
The $55 Secret (Shhh!)
Because we had chatted so pleasantly with her back then, she now offered us her room. Our originally planned landlord was currently renovating his house and had highly recommended her to us.
Normally, she charged tourists $65 a night. But because she had grown so fond of us, she specially reduced the price for us to an unbeatable $55! She only whispered to us with a wink that we shouldn’t tell her husband.
Painful Prices on Maui
That was no comparison to our very first year there. Back then, on the Kaanapali Coast in Maui, they wanted a hefty $470 from us for a single night! As normal workers, we naturally couldn’t afford that in our lives. That was the only reason we fled Maui back then and returned to the North Shore to the Turtle Bay Hilton, where a night still cost an expensive but more manageable $285.
A Perfect Start for Texan & Mischko
The year before, we had paid $75 in the last house on Kaimalino Street. For us, this was an improvement of a full $20 per day! With a vacation duration of 40 days, we saved an extra, impressive $800.
First the free flight for 17 Marks, then the priceless Business Class seats, and now accommodation that was $800 cheaper—the dream of Hawaii couldn’t have started any better for the pioneers Texan and Mischko!
The Bitter Reality Today: “Birdseed” Instead of Premium Service
When Silver Was Worth More Than Gold is Today
If you compare that past luxury with today, it’s almost ridiculous. Back then, our Premier Silver status was worth more than Gold status could ever be today. To get a similar bonus today—like a free flight to Hawaii—it feels like you’d have to fly 500 times.
The Lounge Frustration for Over $100 a Year
And what does United Airlines offer us today? The so-called classic standard lounges, which exist at over 45 airports worldwide. There you find passengers with specific international tickets, holders of a purchased membership, or people with a One-Time Pass.
The advertised features? A few free snacks, drinks, fast Wi-Fi, and an armchair away from the terminal noise. For us, it’s a joke. I pay an annual fee of over $100 for the United Club Card via the Chase credit card. I only got this card because I have a US Social Security Number (SSN)—a normal German tourist can’t even get this card at this cheap price.
Philly Cheesesteak Beats the Standard Lounge
But when I travel today, this lounge is hardly worth it anymore. It is now much nicer to sit down in a real restaurant where you can eat decently—and by that, I certainly don’t mean Burger King.
When I’m traveling, I prefer to go out for a real meal, order an authentic Philly Cheesesteak with fries, and at least be full afterward. I get much more out of that than the “birdseed” that is served in standard lounges today.
CHAPTER 3: Island Dreams and Island Reality: Our Summer ’96 on Oahu Our Secret Paradise at Kailua Beach
An Exclusive Teaser: What Remains of the Gold (Afterword)
When I sit on my lanai today, letting my gaze wander over the Pacific and thinking back on all those years, one thing becomes very clear to me:
The true gold rush doesn’t take place in the dazzling showrooms of luxury resorts. It takes place in the mind.
We came to Hawaii as completely normal tourists, full of dreams and with our hard-earned savings in our bank account. We could have let the romance blind us in the jungle back then. We could have lived beyond our means at the Windward Mall.
And years later in Ko Olina, out of pure vacation whimsy, we could have financed a timeshare castle in the sky. Had we done that, the dream of paradise today would probably be a bitter nightmare of debt and gag contracts.
The fact that our plan worked out perfectly instead is due to two things: patience and stone-cold logic.
By investing cash where others went into debt, and by banking on real concrete that works for us, we bought ourselves a piece of true freedom in paradise. Our small studio in Pearl City, which we bought back then amidst renovation chaos and under the astonished gaze of a cross-eyed notary, is the best proof that being down-to-earth and keeping a cool head always win out in the end.
Hawaii will always remain a place of longing. But the true Aloha that we learned on the islands also means treating what you have achieved with respect and not letting dazzling facades distract you.
I hope our journey has shown you that you can live your dreams without checking your brain at the door. The next time you face a decision that sounds too good to be true—think of our story, take a deep breath, and keep a cool head.
The real gold isn’t lying on the lawn, and it doesn’t hang on the walls of timeshare offices. It lies in the freedom to determine for yourself where the journey goes.
With that in mind: Mahalo for traveling with us—and may your own gold rush always lead you down safe paths.
Aloha nui loa to all my readers and a huge Mahalo for your time!
